When is a NEMA Environmental and Social Impact Assessment required for water projects?

Under the Environmental Management and Co-ordination Act (EMCA) and the Environmental Impact Assessment and Audit Regulations, projects including water supply schemes, wastewater treatment works, drainage channels, and sanitary landfills require an ESIA licence from NEMA before construction commences. What approvals are required for a new water supply scheme in Kenya?

Water supply projects typically require approval from the Water Resources Management Authority (WRMA) for water abstraction rights, the relevant Water Service Board or county water authority for scheme design approval, NEMA for the ESIA licence, and in some cases county government approvals. We assist clients in identifying and obtaining all required consents as part of our design service.

Do you provide drainage design for private residential and commercial developments?

Yes. We provide stormwater and surface drainage design for estate developments, commercial buildings, industrial sites, and mixed-use projects — including compliance with county drainage requirements and preparation of drainage reports for development approval submissions. We work alongside our roads and structures teams where integrated infrastructure design is required.

How long does the design of a water supply or sewerage scheme typically take?

For a small to medium scheme (serving up to 10,000 people), a feasibility study and detailed design typically requires 10–16 weeks, depending on the extent of field investigations, the complexity of the system, and the time required for statutory approvals. We provide a detailed project programme at the commencement of each assignment. Large or complex schemes will require a longer programme, which we discuss with the client at scoping stage.

Yes. We have experience working with clients in Somalia, South Sudan, and Ethiopia, and we are available for assignments across the East and Central Africa region.
